For travelers based in Uzbekistan, this is one of the fastest and most practical ways to enter Tajikistan without a long overland detour or a flight. Samarkand sits close to the border, so the route works well both for a short Panjakent trip and as the first step of a Fann Mountains itinerary.

Another big advantage is what comes next: once you cross, you are already near ancient Sarazm, the road to Panjakent, and the turnoff toward the Seven Lakes. If you understand the logistics in advance, the whole day feels much smoother and calmer.

Step by Step

Getting from Samarkand to the border

Step 1. Get from Samarkand to the Jartepa checkpoint

Your first goal is the Uzbek border point at Jartepa. The easiest option is to take a taxi in Samarkand, but budget travelers often use a marshrutka from Kaftarxona station. That local route is common and usually straightforward if you travel light.

If you choose a taxi, make sure the driver understands that you want the border itself rather than a general ride toward the region. If you go by marshrutka, saying “Jartepa border” is normally enough for the driver to know where you need to get off.

Step 2. What happens at the Jartepa - Sarazm crossing

On the Uzbek side, you go through the usual control at Jartepa, then walk through the neutral zone and enter the Tajik side at Sarazm. It is a pedestrian crossing, so the process is usually simple: passport check, possible visa questions, and then exit to the arrival area.

In regular conditions, the whole crossing often takes about 30-60 minutes. On busy holiday dates or later in the day, queues can be longer, so an early start from Samarkand is usually the most comfortable approach.

Step 3. Visa information and what to check in advance

Citizens of many countries can enter Tajikistan visa-free for a certain period, but the rules depend on nationality and can change. If your passport requires a visa, the easiest solution is usually to arrange it in advance through the official e-visa portal and arrive at the border with everything ready.

It is also smart to check your passport validity, review current entry rules, and keep your accommodation or route details handy. Those small details can save time and make the border process much less stressful.

Step 4. Getting to Panjakent or the Seven Lakes from Sarazm

Once you leave the Tajik side, you are already close to the road toward Panjakent. If the town is your final stop, the drive is usually around 20-25 minutes. If you want to continue into the mountains, it is much easier to arrange a pickup in advance.

For routes to Seven Lakes Tajikistan and Haft Kul, a border pickup is especially useful. Your driver can meet you outside Sarazm, avoid the usual bargaining on the spot, and take you directly toward Panjakent or into the mountains the same day.
