Why this route is such a good idea
For travelers based in Uzbekistan, this is one of the fastest and most practical ways to enter Tajikistan without a long overland detour or a flight. Samarkand sits close to the border, so the route works well both for a short Panjakent trip and as the first step of a Fann Mountains itinerary.
Another big advantage is what comes next: once you cross, you are already near ancient Sarazm, the road to Panjakent, and the turnoff toward the Seven Lakes. If you understand the logistics in advance, the whole day feels much smoother and calmer.
- Kaftarxona in Samarkand is the usual starting point for taxis and marshrutkas.
- The Jartepa - Sarazm crossing is mainly organized for pedestrians.
- In normal conditions, the full process usually takes around 30-60 minutes.
